Questions and answers with Maui Eco Built founder, Erik Beale.
How did Maui Eco Built come about?
After 20 years of custom home building, I became increasingly dismayed by the waste of traditional building methods. I developed a building system to address this concern.
We now have a system that is 99% efficient by weight of materials with only one trash bag of waste per building kit.
What is the panel system about?
The panel system is prefabricated wall panels made in our workshop. The sheets of plywood are used whole with no cutoffs or waste.
How long does it take to build a standard kit?
Typically 3 days for kit 0 and bigger.
The first day we place the footing blocks, posts, and floor system, then we glue and nail down the 3/4" sup floor plywood. This forms the platform for the panel wall system.
The second day, we bring the wall and gable panels on site, raise and nail in place the walls, the roof goes on in the afternoon and is dried in with self adhesive felt at the end of the day.
The third day, we install the doors, windows and build the stairs. This completes the process of installing our basic kit.
The kit oo takes maximum 1 day to install.
How do you see the future of Maui Eco Built?
These buildings have many uses, for accessory buildings or combined to form cottages and houses.
They are all designed to integrate photovoltaic panels to create a power house and store inverters and batteries. The basis of a self powered eco-modular living environment.
Another idea is production can also be stepped up to provide disaster relief housing. |
